Winning Weekend for the Vitus ZX-1

It’s been a weekend of podiums and a win for Vitus Pro Cycling p/b Brother UK. The UCI continental team have been making noise in races all over the UK after successfully finishing third in the OVO Energy Tour Series in May.

The team ride the 2019 Vitus ZX-1, our aero inspired, performance focussed race bike. We caught up with the some of the riders to find out how each race went.

Chris McGlinchey wins the 2019 Blair International Red Hand Trophy

“It’s always good to race on home soil and even better to get a win.”

Hot on the heels of a great ride at the Tour de Yorkshire with his Vitus Pro Cycling team, Chris McGlinchey has taken a big win on home roads.

Irish international and our very own Marketing Manager, Chris McGlinchey soloed to an impressive win at round three of the Cycling Ireland National Road Series in Ballymena on Saturday.

The event was the third round of Cycling Ireland’s National Road Series, with McGlinchey taking his first victory in that series.

McGlinchey was first to cross the line, attacking along the coast to get clear with fellow rising star Adam Ward. Discontent with that company though, the 25-year-old went again, setting himself up for a 15km time-trial to the line, battling a head wind all the way.

He said: “It was pretty aggressive all day. The first 10 miles were pretty steep climbs, so we attacked there and got a group of about 12. In Ballycastle we split it up again, we went down into Cushendall and it was constant attacking and attacking until a group of six got away along the coast.

“Adam Ward attacked on that final climb, and I bridged across to him and attacked him and just soloed for the last 15km. It was pretty tough.”

Mikey Mottram takes second in the Central Region Men’s road race Championships

Mikey Mottram takes second in the Central Region Men’s Road Race Champs in Abingdon.

“Got away on the decent with one other rider. The original brake was splitting up and we were catching them some were sticking with us some got dropped. A couple more came across but was too late to catch the loan leader. I attacked on the last drag, Callum Macleod from Canyon dhb came with me and had a two-up sprint for 2nd.

Bike was good as always, I attacked on the main road decent so was at about 80kph, but it felt comfortable. Also, the ZX-1 was nice and responsive when it came to attacks and sprints.”

RED Walters clinches 3rd at the Regional Road Race Champs

“Coming into regionals this year I was quietly confident I’d finally found my flow tactics-wise, and after tweaking my position on the ZX-1, I felt like I had many more watts to give. It was a hard, exposed course so an early break going the distance was a plausible outcome. I put in a few digs, but the bunch still had the energy to chase in the first 2 hours.

Later on, there were a couple of groups up the road and I bridged across with 3 or 4 other guys. I was then surprised to find out 4 riders were even further ahead with a 3-minute gap at 2 laps to go.

Our group was a fair bit bigger and we managed to make the catch with 5kms of racing left. Coming into the finish with a group of about 15, I was aware that an attack was inevitable as a lot of guys don’t want to take it to a sprint, so I was trying to call out the attacks. Jack Freeman hit it with a kilometre to go. I didn’t want to react as there were also a fair few pairs and 3’s from the same teams.

Fair play to Jack though as there were a lot more tired legs than I’d thought and he managed to stay away. I then took 2nd from the bunch, for 3rd and a bronze overall.”

Adam Kenway comes 2nd in the East Midland Championship

“The race was really aggressive from the start, the break eventually formed but the gap never went out very far. With about three laps to go 11 clicked off the main bunch trying to come across to us that had team mates Graham and Ali but they never managed to get across.

With about 5km to go I attacked the break but Ollie manage to stay with me, we then battled it out for the win. I was happy with the result, you always want to win the divisional Championships but it’s always a tough race.”
